The Excelsa/ Liberica Project

Why this project is important?

In Vietnam, Excelsa / Liberica is generally available at two extremes:

  • Poorly processed, inexpensive coffee. Cherries may not be properly sorted, and natural drying is often unmanaged—too fast under strong sun, or exposed to mould during wet weather. Insufficient turning can also result in uneven or overheated drying, compromising both roasting performance and cup quality. This coffee is cheap, but usually falls outside the consideration of serious roasters and manufacturers.
  • Meticulously processed, highly premium coffee. Advanced fermentation and controlled drying can demonstrate the potential of Excelsa / Liberica. However, these coffees are produced in very limited quantities and sold at premium prices, limiting the chances to work with a wider network of farmers

Why Quang Tri - Vietnam?

Many regions around the world grow Excelsa / Liberica. But Quang Tri has a unique combination of history, existing production, and urgency.

  • It is one of the few regions where Excelsa / Liberica has been traditionally grown in abundance for generations, providing an existing base for more efficient production and logistics.
  • The region has proven highly suitable for the variety and can produce fine Excelsa / Liberica that meets specialty standards. We WON 3rd place for Excelsa/Liberica in South East Asia Green Coffee Competition 2025.
  • Excelsa / Liberica from Quang Tri has shown caffeine levels of around 0.84–0.88% of dry matter - potential for a new natural low caffein coffee product line.

Why NOW?

  • Quang Tri is now facing increasing challenges for Arabica cultivation due to  climate changes. For many farmers, Excelsa/Liberica offers renewed hope for a crop that can remain viable in their landscape.
  • While in many other regions, the cultivation of this variety is not enough for optimized production and logistics, Quang Tri has it all to become a new text-book example.  If the climate resilient coffee for the future story cannot happen now in Quang Tri, when will it happen?

Wildest dream for the Wild Coffee

We are working tirelessly for this dream from both Top Down and Bottom Up

TOP DOWN:

  • Working with investors who believe in the same dreams.
  • Finding direct buyers & importers: building relationships that last, promises to be kept, solutions for growth & sustainability.

BOTTOM UP:

  • Buy quality, 100% ripe cherries at better price
  • Buy from more farmers
  • SS 2026 we were the biggest buyer of 100% ripe Excelsa/Liberica cherries in Quang Tri

Academia & Development projects

We are willing to support and cooperate with Academic & Development projects. As it is also our ambition to generate more serious talks and discussions around the topic of sustainable coffee - specifically Excelsa/Liberica
